Arriving at the port
At Port Arthur, cruise vessels cannot berth, and tenders carry passengers ashore.
The Port Arthur Historic Site is visitors’ central point. Tender boats leave passengers only a short walk from the site entrance, making access easy.

Port Arthur is a former convict settlement and small town of 500 people on Tasmania’s Tasman Peninsula, Australia. It is among Australia’s most significant heritage areas and officially Tasmania’s leading tourist attraction. Its harsh conditions, dark past and stark beauty lie 96 km on a scenic south-east drive from Hobart, the state capital.
Getting around
At the Port Arthur Historic Site visitor centre, the half-day Bronze pass grants entry to more than 30 historic buildings, ruins, gardens and museum houses; it also includes a fascinating 40 minute guided walk introducing Port Arthur, its people and past, and a 30 minute harbour cruise aboard MV Marana. Food and shopping
Visitor facilities include two cafes, an evening bistro, a gift shop and other amenities. Local artisans are said to run a market with coffee stands, ice cream, alcohol and crafts, providing a way to explore local culture.
