Arriving at the port

Ships berth near the centre of town.

Piombino occupies the final section of the Etruscan Coast, which is considered to begin near Livorno, a hundred kilometres farther north. Of historical interest, in the early 1800s Napoleon Bonaparte gave Piombino to his sister, Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, who became regent of the Principality of Lucca and Piombino. The Princess of Piombino called the city "my little Paris", and her reign brought the town a period of great splendour. Built above the sea, Piombino has always served as a naval base. Its port now handles freight and operates as a marina. From Piombino's harbour, you can board one of the many ferries…

02

Getting around

Piombino is the departure port for the stunning island of Elba. Portoferraio is Elba's main harbour and receives most ferries serving the island.
