Arriving at the port
New Plymouth is the main centre of the Taranaki region. The area has enjoyed the benefits of oil, gas and petrochemical activity and some of the public facilities in the city reflect this relative prosperity. Modernisation has begun in the CBD with many new eateries and bars opening up, including boutique designer stores and artisanal producers.
Getting around
Pukekura Park: Start your visit with a stroll through Pukekura Park, a lush oasis in the heart of the city. It's famous for its beautifully landscaped gardens, walking trails, and the stunning illumination displays during the Festival of Lights in summer.
Coastal Walkway: Take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the Coastal Walkway, a picturesque 12.7-kilometer pathway that offers breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea, Mount Taranaki, and the city. You can also stop at the Wind Wand sculpture, which is an iconic symbol of New Plymouth.
Mount Taranaki: A visit to New Plymouth wouldn't be complete without exploring Mount Taranaki, a dormant volcano surrounded by lush forests. You can hike the various trails, with the most popular being the Pouakai Crossing, which provides stunning views of the mountain and its mirrored reflection in the Pouakai Tarns.
Len Lye Centre: Art enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Len Lye Centre, a unique art museum that celebrates the work of pioneering filmmaker and kinetic artist Len Lye. The contemporary building itself is a work of art and features interactive exhibits.
Taranaki Aviation Transport and Technology Museum: This museum is a treat for aviation and transport enthusiasts. It houses an impressive collection of vintage aircraft, vehicles, and technology, providing insight into New Plymouth's transportation history.
