01

Arriving at the port

Bluie West One airfield was built on a glacial moraine in today's village of Narsarsuaq near Greenland's southern tip. The U.S. Army began construction in June 1941, and the first aircraft touched down in January 1942. This still-important airport employs most local residents. Vessels up to 118 metres long can berth here.

Narsarsuaq has about 170 inhabitants and supports a flourishing tourism sector in the village and surrounding area. Attractions encompass varied wildlife, gemstones, glacier trips and an airfield museum. The town is fairly wet, with Atlantic storms pounding it throughout the year.
