Two dedicated cruise berths provide alongside water depth of up to 11 metres.

Kenya Ports Authority plans to transform berths 1 and 2 into an ultramodern cruise complex. Its terminal will provide airport-style amenities such as lounges, restaurants and souvenir shops, alongside reception desks for cruise operators and customs and immigration offices.

The town is not walkable from the port, so use a taxi or transport supplied by the ship.

Mombasa combines a long history with the energy of a fascinating commercial and cosmopolitan port town. Bridges and ferries link this island city with the mainland. It overlooks a broad harbour where merchant shipping shares the water with traditional sailing dhows.

Mombasa's true centre is its exotic old town, a district of winding narrow streets and Arab architecture filled with the scent of spices. Travel around Mombasa by city bus, matatu or taxi. The old town and district surrounding Fort Jesus are easy to cover on foot.

Several countries warn that the city centre is unsafe at night, car-jacking is widespread and beach robberies may happen after sunset. Apply common sense and remain healthily sceptical about your surroundings. A ship-organised trip may be the safest choice.

Bargaining is widely expected in markets and even certain shops across Kenya. Deeply rooted in the culture, it is considered an essential commercial skill.

The Kenya Shilling is the official currency. Write it as KSh or place /= after the sum, for example 500/=. Notes are issued as 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 shillings, while coins come as 1, 5, 10, 20 and 40 shillings. Exchange foreign money at banks, bureaux de change or authorised hotels. US Dollars, Pounds sterling and EURO are the simplest currencies to change. Travellers' Cheques are accepted widely, and many hotels, agencies, safari operators and restaurants take credit cards. Most Kenyan banks can provide credit-card cash advances. There are no restrictions on the amount involved...

Kenya has capable internet service providers. Many lodges and hotels offer email and internet access, while most towns have numerous private business centres and cybercafés providing both services.
