Arriving at the port

Makemo lies 500 kilometres east of Tahiti, a 1h30 flight away, and is the Tuamotu's third-largest atoll. Its lagoon varies from 5-8 kilometres (3-5 miles) wide and extends 65 kilometres (40 miles) from north-west to south-east. About 588 inhabitants live mainly in Pouheva village near the two passes, which are diving locations renowned for diverse, exuberant fauna.
