Arriving at the port
Ships moor or anchor in this port, with tenders taking passengers ashore.
Maiao is an 8.8 km² (3.4 sq. mi.) island formation 78 km (48.5 miles) south-west of Moorea and belongs to French Polynesia's Windward Islands, or Îles du Vent in French. It comprises one high island, whose summit reaches 154 metres (505'), and a low island, or motu, winding around its base. Two hypersaline endorheic lagoons, Roto Iti and Roto Rahi, lie within the formation, with another lagoon at its edge. Narrow channels connect every lagoon. Around 300 people live on Maiao.
