The surrounding sea moderates Macquarie Island's climate, keeping the monthly average temperature above freezing throughout the year. Snow is nevertheless frequent from June to October and can fall even during the island's "summer".

Macquarie Island occupies the south-west corner of the Pacific Ocean, roughly halfway between Australia and Antarctica.
Island wildlife includes Subantarctic Fur Seals, Antarctic Fur Seals, New Zealand Fur Seals and more than 80,000 Southern Elephant Seals. Royal Penguins breed nowhere else, while King Penguins, Southern Rockhopper Penguins and Gentoo penguins also breed here.
