Western Sahara is sparsely populated, an unsurprising result of its desert-dominated landscape, and this disputed territory has faced serious debate and conflict for decades. After Spain surrendered colonial control in 1975, neighbouring Morocco and Mauritania divided the land between them despite protests from the Polisario Front, a party committed to national emancipation for the Sahrawi people. The question remains unresolved and deeply divisive, with thousands of Moroccan troops defending their claim and occasional insurgencies by the Polisario Front.
Consequently, Western Sahara is scarcely a holiday destination. Travel there has proved difficult for journalists and human-rights delegates, never mind tourists.
