Making the most of Kuantan

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

The port is 25km from town, making a taxi necessary. A return trip costs $80, plus waiting time at $10 per hour.

There are no sights of interest around the harbour.

Kuantan is the capital of Pahang, the Malaysian Peninsula's largest state, and stands near the Kuantan River mouth facing the South China Sea. Though compact, it attracts visitors with the State's statuesque mosque and stained-glass windows, together with nearby beaches ideal for watersports such as windsurfing.

Public beaches provide no chairs, loungers or changing rooms. Heading to one of the resort hotels is therefore the best alternative for greater comfort.

02

Nearby places

Gua Carah Caves at Pancing, 24 km away, are well worth seeing. An ancient Buddha inside is accessible to people of every age.

Nearby Pekan, the Royal City, contains Sultan's Palace and State Museum, whose displays cover Pahang and its royal family.

About 40 minutes from Kuantan, Sungai Lembing Museum tells the rich and interesting story of the town's mining industry.

Beautiful nearby waterfalls known to visitors include Sungai Padan Waterfall.

Teluk Chempedak, 5 km northeast of Kuantan, is an attractive beach with boating, kayaking and other watersports. Kuantan Hyatt Hotel stands directly on Teluk Chempedak. A long boardwalk over rocks and boulders begins on the left of Teluk Cempedak beach and connects to a second shore. Email the hotel to ask whether its facilities are available.
