Making the most of Koror

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Cruise vessels call at Malakal Harbor on Malakal Island, outside Koror.

Take the printable map ashore.

Koror is Palau's principal city and island area, although not its largest, and accommodates most visitors. It provides a convenient base for Babeldoab and the Rock Islands. Returning travellers may notice increasing modernisation and worsening traffic. Restaurants and shops are available.

Belau National Museum explores the islands' cultural past, while Senior Citizens Center shows older residents passing handicraft traditions to a new generation. Etpison Museum has excellent displays and a restaurant/gift shop. Palau Aquarium, the interpretive branch of Palau International Coral Reef Center, adds numerous exhibits, including the chambered nautilus.

Scuba enthusiasts rate Palau as one of the world's finest diving destinations. Unspoilt reefs, caves and walls support an exceptionally varied display of marine life.

Tiny Koror has enough tourist shopping, supermarkets and Internet Cafés to fill a couple of hours.

02

Food and shopping

Several Koror shops sell traditional Palauan storyboards, but the jail is considered the best source. It sells pieces on behalf of prisoners, with proceeds helping to support their families during incarceration. The jail stands back from the road on the east side of central Koror.

03

Money

The currency is the US Dollar (USD).

04

Staying connected

English and Palauan are the official languages.
