The passenger port is about 300 metres from the main square, cathedral, cafés, restaurants and principal attractions. Shuttles are sometimes provided, although the walk takes only 5 minutes. A futuristic lift across the road reaches the town centre.

During cruise season on Saturdays and Sundays, a small tourist train leaves the dock every half an hour for a free circuit around Old Town. It is particularly helpful for passengers with minor mobility difficulties.

Koper's principal attraction is its Venetian-era Old Town. Cevljarska, the busy main street, narrows to only two or three metres in places and leads to Titov Trg (Tito Square). The square is dominated by the St. Mary's of the Assumption Cathedral bell tower, climbed by 204 steps for 3 Euro. Another remarkable building is the hacienda-like Praetorian Palace, formerly the Venetian Republic governor's seat.

Koper is a very pleasant place for several hours, and most shops open when a cruise vessel is visiting.

When more than one cruise ship calls, avoid returning for lunch between 1pm and 3 pm because queues at port security can become very long. Plan the day accordingly.

Koper's Old City is straightforward to cover on foot.

Numerous port tour providers sell a wide choice of trips. Disembark early to reserve the excursion you prefer.

A narrated bus circuit visits Izola, Portoroz and Piran, three attractive seaside towns, for 22 Euro. Ask at the port kiosks. An early departure provides more time, up to 1.5 hours, in each town.

Ljubljana combines everything expected of a modern capital with the relaxed feel of a small city. It is picturesque, lively and full of surprises.

General shopping hours are Mon-Fri 0800-1900 and Sat 0800-1300. Except for large malls, shops close on Saturday afternoon and Sunday unless a cruise vessel is docked.
