When you step off the dock, there is a long shopping district that has cheap looking clothing, some bars, stores with beauty products, and electronics. But nothing extra-ordinary!
Itajaí has many beautiful beaches, among them are the Molhes, Atalaia, Jeremias, Cabeçudas (the cleanest of them all), Morcego, Praia Brava and Solidão. Take a local bus or a taxi.
