Sightseeing:
Located on the Atlantic Ocean just south of Salvador, Ilhéus boasts beautiful beaches and a rich Portuguese heritage found in the city's architecture and culinary treats. Ilheus' many beaches offer everything from swimming, fishing, water sports, snorkeling, to simply relaxing under a palm tree. In the city visit Saint George of Ilhéus Church and the neighboring Sacred Art Museum, home to sacred documents and important objects from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The beaches in town can be dirty. Go south for cleaner beaches.
Getting around
Trips to a chocolate factory and Primavera Fazenda, where you’ll be taken through the process of cacao production, can all be arranged through local travel agencies.
Tours are also given of Lagoa Encantada, a state-protected area of Atlantic rain forest with waterfalls and wildlife.
Nearby places
Discover a little bit of chocolate heaven when you visit an old time cacao plantation on the outskirts of town. Between the process and the samples, you'll surely see why some call Ilhéus the Cacoa Coast.
Take a dip in the healing hot springs at Olivença.
Visit Casa de Jorge Amado and learn about the life of this famous Brazilian novelist.
Food and shopping
The Mercado de Artesanato is located in llheus downtown area and sells almost everything you can imagine. Hammocks, purses, landscape paintings, electronics and tiles are some examples of goods found in the market. Haggling is recommended as most of the items are set at exorbitant prices.

Opening Hours and
Basic hours for most stores and businesses are from 9am to 6pm, with an extended lunch hour from around noon to 2pm.
Many museums are closed on monday.
Festivals. The best are the Gincana da Pesca in early January, Festa de São Sebastião (much samba and capoeira) from January 11 to 20, Festa de São Jorge on April 23 and Festa das Águas in December.
