Making the most of Husavik

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Ships are due to anchor, with tenders taking guests to land. The town centre is accessible on foot.

For the Cruise Schedule, select the month, year and port.

Húsavík lies beneath Húsavíkurfjall mountain on the east side of Skjálfandi bay. Lake Botnsvatn, immediately above town, is popular for outings and just the right size for a pleasant circuit on foot. Vegetation and bird life thrive around its shores, while its trout are said to be abundant but small.

02

Getting around

Iceland's first organised whale-watching excursions left Húsavík in 1995. The activity has since become a major draw, and the town remains its leading destination. A fascinating whale museum beside the harbour complements the boat tours.

Húsavík Church is considered by many Icelanders to be the country's most beautiful timber church. Built in 1906-1907 to a cross-shaped plan, it has a steeple rising 26 metres above the entrance.

Trips farther afield travel through Laxárdalur and Laxárgljúfur canyon to Lake Mývatn, while Godafoss is approximately 45 minutes' drive to the southwest.

03

Money

Iceland's currency is the "króna." Coin values are 100 kr., 50 kr., 10 kr., 5 kr. and 1 kr.; notes come as 5000 kr., 2000 kr., 1000 kr. and 500 kr. Every Icelandic bank provides currency exchange and generally opens on weekdays between 09:15 and 16:00.

EUROPAY/MASTERCARD and VISA are Iceland's principal cards. Cash is available from every bank branch, more than 170 in total, and from ATMs across the country.
