Making the most of Greenock Scotland

Arriving at the port
Greenock Ocean and Cruise terminal connects to the town centre by a short walkway. Glasgow is easy to reach by train, and taxis are available. Passenger rail is within 10 minutes walk; ask for the nearest station. Trains leave about every 20 minutes.
At the head of the scenic, sheltered Clyde estuary on Scotland's Atlantic coast, Greenock Ocean Terminal combines a deep-water quay, modern quayside facilities and an excellent location.
Inside the terminal are information areas, currency exchange and vendors. The Inverclyde tourist group has tables in the middle for local information, maps and sign-up for free local bus tours. Proud local volunteers run these tours.
Bagpipes are likely to greet you on arrival in very friendly Greenock.
The new terminal building has been built and has operated since summer 2022.

As Greenock is not a huge town, getting about on foot is fairly easy. If you want to explore the hills above it and enjoy spectacular views of mountains across the Clyde, a car is a sensible way to reach them.
One of Greenock's best walks follows The Esplanade, a beautiful road at the water's edge. It has breathtaking views over the broad Clyde to Helensburgh, Kilcreggan and the Highlands. If you are very lucky, a Baby Seal! may even appear.
Getting around
Free tours operate around the local area, but places are quickly taken.
Two train stations are both 1km from the pier. Glasgow fares are £6-8 depending on departure time, and journeys take 25-45 minutes.
Taxis charge about 30 pounds per hour. A journey to Glasgow costs around £50 – £65 and takes around 30 minutes.
For Glasgow, bus lines #901 and X7 take approximately 50 minutes. Tickets cost around £5 per person each way. Greenock's main bus station on Kilblain Street is less than a 10-minute walk from the port.
Nearby places
Glasgow is 35 minutes away by train or 50 minutes by bus, while Edinburgh is 2 hours away by train. Both cities have hop on/off double decker tours leaving from their respective train stations. Check trains here.
Food and shopping
Greenock's main shopping center is the Oak Mall, containing most high-street shops expected in a reasonable UK town. A large Tesco supermarket is next door, with further shops in streets around "The Oak Mall", especially "West Blackhall Street" and "Cathcart Street".
Money
The UK currency is the pound (£), also known in slang as quid. Scottish bank notes are frowned upon in other parts of the UK, so exchange them before leaving Scotland.
Cash machines (ATM), less formally called 'holes in the wall', are widespread and usually issue £10 and £20 notes.
Most shops and restaurants accept Visa, Mastercard and Maestro.

Ocean Terminal has limited wi-fi; ask the Inverclyde Tourist Group information desk for the password. There are also 3 terminals.
Most cafes and restaurants provide free WiFi.

Shopping hours are generally as follows:
Small stores open 6 or 7 days each week, 10am - 6pm. Larger stores generally stay open until 9PM, while Hyper marts often trade 24/7.
