Arriving at the port

Geraldton is Western Australia’s Mid West capital and the gateway to the magnificent Abrolhos Islands.

Four shore tension units were recently acquired, allowing ships to berth safely in Geraldton.

Every cruise ship now enters Geraldton Port, so passengers no longer need to tender ashore.

Geraldton Cruise Ship Meet and Greet Volunteers attend every arrival and can provide local information. The nearby Geraldton Visitor Centre offers further area advice, and restaurants, pubs, cafes, bars and shopping precincts are close at hand.

Geraldton-Greenough’s exceptional setting supports many holiday activities, particularly water sports. Windsurfing, kite surfing, surfing, fishing, diving and swimming suit energetic visitors; for a slower pace, relax on white sandy beaches, walk the shorelines or wade in turquoise shallows.

Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the Western Australian Museum — Geraldton tells the Mid West’s rich land, sea and people heritage. A guided tour covers four major early regional shipwrecks, Batavia, Gilt Dragon, Zuytdorp and Zeewijk, and explains the discovery of HMAS Sydney (II), pride of the fleet.

Shops and services usually trade Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and to lunchtime on Saturday. In cities and larger towns, many stay open until 9pm on Thursday or Friday evenings and throughout Saturday; shopping malls often also open Sundays.

In remote country districts, roadhouses supply essential traveller services and are generally open 24 hours a day on major highways. Tourist offices, even far off the beaten track, often open daily or through the week plus weekend mornings, while urban information centers more often keep normal shopping hours.

Museums, galleries and attended historic monuments often open daily, though rural-community attractions can have irregular hours.
