Making the most of Gaeta

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Cruise vessels berth in the centre of Gaeta.

Beautiful Gaeta occupies a headland between Rome and Naples and has spent centuries as a popular coastal resort, as well as serving as an ancient and modern naval harbour. A huge castle of uncertain origin, perhaps from the sixth century, dominates its skyline. Climb Monte Orlando to the first-century BC mausoleum of Roman senator Lucius Munatius Plancus, then look down over Serapo Beach and its fine sand beside clear water.

02

Getting around

Walking is the best way to see Gaeta.

03

Nearby places

Both Rome and Naples are about 60 minutes away by car.

04

Food and shopping

Gaeta is an excellent place for seafood, with most restaurants specialising in local fish and shellfish. Its famous olives also originate here. At the far end of the old town, do not miss El Tiburon's gelato.

05

Money

The local currency is the euro.

06

Staying connected

Italian is spoken.

Internet cafés operate both along the waterfront and in the city centre.

For emergencies, call 112.

07

Opening Hours and

Most shops and businesses across Italy open Monday to Saturday from approximately 8am to 1pm, then 4pm to 7pm. Many close on Saturday afternoons and Monday mornings, while southern days may start and end an hour later. Some northern firms follow a 9am-5pm schedule to support international dealings. Traditionally, only restaurants and bars open on Sunday, although most towns have a pasticceria trading in the morning and Sunday retail is growing more common in major cities and visitor areas.
