Making the most of Eidfjord

Arriving at the port
Eidfjord lies at the innermost end of the famous Hardangerfjord. Eidfjord Cruise Port opened in May 2005 and sits in the village centre; the sail-in is spectacular.
This lovely, very small town has about 1000 inhabitants and is directly accessible from the ship on foot.
For a gentle walk, ask at the tourist office near the dock for a walking guide. One attractive route follows the river from the far side of the bridge opposite your berth, through woodland on some slightly rough but mostly good tracks and quiet roads, to a lake.
Walkers can reach several Eidfjord attractions, including the Hæreid Viking graves, 20 minutes from town centre on foot, and the Old Church, built in 1309.
Getting around
On cruise-call days, the Troll Train runs a 1 hour guided Eidfjord tour from outside the tourist information office. It first visits Hereid terrace and Western Norway's largest collection of iron- and Viking-age graves. Returning towards the centre, it makes a 10-minute photo stop overlooking the fjord and mountains, then continues to Lægreid terrace for a 10-minutes view of Eidfjord Old church, built in 1309. The train returns to the centre; tickets are sold at tourist information.
Nearby places
Vøringsfossen, long Norway's most visited natural attraction, drops 600 feet (183 meters). It is 12.1 miles, or 19.5 kilometers, from Eidfjord, and the region has several other waterfalls, some even higher than Vøringsfossen.
The Hardangervidda plateau is internationally known, and many tourists come to Eidfjord specifically to see it and Hardangerfjord, Norway's second longest fjord. For visitors who do not wish to trek in an alpine climate, Hardangervidda Natursenter is an alternative. This combined museum and visitor center provides an overview of this part of Norway, its landscape and its natural surroundings.
