Dutch Harbor Unalaska Island

A visit can bring superb seabirds, active volcanoes, compelling native culture and a genuine feeling of wilderness. The Aleuts are among the Americas' oldest continuously resident groups.

Dutch Harbor is 800 miles from Anchorage and covers approximately 80 square miles, rising to 6,680 feet at Makushin Volcano's summit. It has been the nation's leading fishing port for more than a decade.

See the first Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1825. In the mid-1850s, the cathedral was rebuilt as the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension. It is the oldest surviving Russian church in the USA and a National Historic Landmark.

The area offers wildlife views, including pleasant sightings of bald eagles.

The United States dollar (symbol: $) is the official U.S. currency, and ATM's are everywhere.

Visa, MasterCard and other major credit cards are widely accepted, even for purchases of only a few dollars; occasionally they may be the sole way to pay. Overseas visitors should remember that goods and services can appear cheaper than they are because taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

In most states, sales tax ranges from 2.9% to nearly 10% of retail price, with 4-6% typical. Posted prices almost never include it, except on gasoline and, in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises; it is calculated and added when payment is made.

The U.S. has no federal official language, but English is overwhelmingly the everyday standard and is the official state language in several states. Spanish is also official and widely spoken in New Mexico; French is official in Louisiana and Hawaiian in Hawaii, although neither is used on the scale of English and both hold official status largely for historical reasons.

In major metropolitan areas such as New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets routinely operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers usually open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, with shorter Sunday hours, typically 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. Stores tend to open on holidays except the most important, including Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, when they generally close.
