Arriving at the port
Cruise ships dock close to the center of Kaloum also referred to as La Ville, the center of Conakry.
Spreading along a narrow peninsula, Guinea's capital city is noisy, chaotic and polluted, a dramatic contrast from the country's peaceful, picturesque interior, where most visitors choose to spend their time. Among the downtown sights are the Palais de Nations, Musee National (regional displays from all of Guinea), the Place de la Republique, the Niger markets and St. Mary's Cathedral (an early-20th-century structure). In the Camayenne district, the nation's largest mosque stands near Conakry's arboretum, featuring towering tropical trees and a private plant nursery.
Nearby places
To escape the urban frenzy, take day excursions to the Iles de Los, a short boat ride from the capital's port, or drive to the nearby town of Dubreeka to visit Mount Kakoulima and Soumba Falls.
Food and shopping
In front of the Presidential Palace you will find the Avenue de la Republique, full of restaurants and cafes which offer free WiFi for customers. The bustling Marche du Niger market is only a few blocks up from here.
Large stores are also open on Sundays.
