On Tasmania's east coast, the small town of Coles Bay occupies the sheltered western shore of the Freycinet Peninsula, 70 miles (115km) north-east of Hobart. Spectacular pink-granite outcrops called the Hazards dominate the setting. Coles Bay opens onto sandy beaches, quiet coves, rocky cliffs and excellent Freycinet National Park, known for coastal heath, orchids, wildflowers and wildlife such as black cockatoos, yellow wattlebirds, honeyeaters and Bennetts wallabies.
