Food and shopping
Iran’s official currency is the rial (ریال), though high inflation means prices may be expressed in toman (تومان) to save time. One toman equals ten rials. Written amounts are generally in rials, whereas spoken prices usually use tomans. Shopkeepers may also omit the denomination from large figures: coffee priced at 2 tomans means 2,000 tomans or IR 20,000, while a rug at 3 tomans means 3,000,000 tomans or IR 30,000,000. In conversation, 1 Chomejni represents IR 10,000.
Importing or consuming alcohol is strictly prohibited, with severe penalties potentially including corporal punishment. Religious minorities may produce and drink alcohol but cannot import or sell it. Pork and pork products are forbidden, and their importation is illegal just like alcohol.
