Making the most of Bozcaada

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Bozcaada is an island on the Aegean Sea, near the western exit of Dardanelles in Turkey. Its ancient name is Tenedos.

This is a tender port. The town is really small, you can walk from one edge of it to another in approximately ten minutes.

Striped with vineyards, this little island is best known for its wine – the grapes here make a fantastic red. It’s pretty off the beaten track, so you won’t find hordes of holidaymakers here, just half-empty beaches, beautiful countryside and a quaint waterside town with cobbled streets and family-run fish restaurants.

02

Getting around

Poke around the honey-colored fortress. It stands right on a cliff edge and has housed everyone from the Byzantines to the Venetians. Entrance fee: 5 TL

There are frequent minibusses heading for Ayazma and Habbele beaches. Their departure is in the square right next to the entrance of the castle. A one-way ride costs 3 TL per person and takes about 15 minutes. Renting two deckchairs and a beach umbrella for half a day in Ayazma beach costs 5 TL.

03

Nearby places

The ancient city of Troy is a short ferry trip from Bozcaada. Here, you can wander around the UNESCO-rated acropolis, known as the site of the legendary Trojan War.

04

Food and shopping

Tomato jam: This delicious jam can be only found on the island in Turkey.

05

Money

Turkey's currency is the Turkish Lira. Many shops and restaurants in the coastal resorts and big cities accept payment in euros and US dollars. But if you are planning to travel to other parts of the country, it is advisable to take some Turkish Lira.

06

Staying connected

Limited 4G connection on the island. The pier is your best bet.
