Making the most of Boca do Valeria

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Cruise ships cannot dock here, so passengers are tendered ashore.

Bring a camera on the tender: this is where the Valeria River meets the Amazon. The waters of the two rivers remain distinct for miles before finally blending.

This small, remote Indian community stands at the Valeria river entrance on a 400ft hill overlooking the Amazon River, between Parintins and Santarem. Calls offer jungle exploration in search of monkeys, butterflies and colourful birdlife, alongside wooden carvings and gourd masks. They also reveal something of the villagers’ simple, traditional lifestyle.

02

Getting around

No facilities are available for organised excursions. If conditions allow, ship’s tenders may take passengers to a typical Caboclo, or river-dweller, village for a glimpse of native traditional life. Monkeys and snakes can be seen, along with a selection of local handicrafts.

03

The currency is the Brazilian Real.
