Basseterre

The harbour area has three separate piers, including dedicated facilities for cruise vessels and the Caribe Queen ferry between St. Kitts and Charlestown, capital of Nevis. Friday and Saturday are particularly lively because the colourful fruit and vegetable market operates beside the pier. Port Zante’s terminal includes cafés, shops and restaurants, and downtown Basseterre—known as The Circus—is about a 10-minute walk away.

Since 2020, the pier has been able to accommodate four large cruise vessels simultaneously. When more than four are scheduled, additional ships use the cargo harbour or land their passengers by tender.

Passengers walk through the duty-free retail area towards central Basseterre. Shopkeepers may request proof that a customer is not resident before applying duty-free prices, such as a cruise card, overseas driving licence or passport.

A gentle hour-long walk covers Basseterre’s main sights. The capital of St. Kitts has around 15,000 residents, and its square-block street pattern makes it particularly easy to discover on foot.

Basseterre has served as the British capital of St. Kitts since 1727, although it lay within the French sector when both countries shared control of the island.

In French, Basseterre means low land—an accurate description of much of the commercial centre, which has experienced repeated flooding.

Look near the pier for brightly painted red and yellow wooden fishing boats, where nets dry in the sunshine and create a memorable photographic scene.

The domed colonial Treasury Building stands directly on the waterfront, recalling the islands’ importance as sugar colonies. Every item entering or leaving St. Kitts once passed beneath its arches.

Take care around handlers offering photographs with monkeys: a charge may be demanded if an animal climbs onto you and a picture is taken.

Taxis are usually waiting for longer journeys. Confirm the total fare with your driver before departure.

Numerous excursion companies operate at the dock, often at competitive prices.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway completes a 3-hour, 30-mile circuit of this beautiful Eastern Caribbean island. The experience combines 18 miles aboard a narrow-gauge train with 12 miles by sightseeing coach.

Sky Safari Tours operates a sophisticated scenic zip-line route above Wingfrield River through the St. Kitts rainforest. After one 180ft training line, participants tackle four longer lines measuring between 500ft and 1,350 ft. The experience aims to combine eco-adventure with interpretation of St. Kitts.

UNESCO recognises Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park as a World Heritage Site for its historical, architectural and cultural value. The fortress demonstrates both the ingenuity of its British military designers and the skill, strength and endurance of the enslaved Africans who constructed and maintained it.

Unusual driving-licence requirements make hiring a car an unattractive choice.

Travel by ferry to Nevis, the smaller of the two islands forming the Caribbean Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Charlestown is a 45 minute crossing away and a return journey costs about $23, with departures roughly hourly. Avoid relying on the final sailing because boats can be delayed or reach capacity.

Alternatively, relax on one of the island’s many beaches.

Downtown Basseterre, called The Circus, forms the principal shopping district. Several duty-free retailers offer jewellery, watches, fragrance, china and crystal, while local crafts include Caribelle Batik scarves, fabrics, caftans and wall hangings.

A long finger pier, welcome centre and expansive duty-free retail complex with cafés and restaurants make up the cruise port.

Eastern Caribbean dollars are the local currency, though U.S. dollars are accepted almost everywhere.

English is the local language.
