Making the most of Barbuda

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Barbuda’s cruise landing point is normally at Codrington Lagoon, approximately 1-2 kilometres from the island’s principal settlement, Codrington.

Tall sailing vessels account for most calls at this port.

Expect mainly a half-day beach visit, with passengers brought ashore by tender.

Pink Beach is Barbuda’s signature stretch of soft sand. Almost eight miles of uncrowded coastline run between Spanish Point and Palmetto Point, with excellent snorkelling. Crushed coral gives the champagne-coloured shore its rose tint, and walkers can cover miles without encountering another person.

An abundance of coral reefs and wrecks makes Barbuda suitable both for first-time snorkellers and accomplished deep-sea divers.

02

Getting around

An estimated 2,500 frigate birds inhabit the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, creating the world’s largest gathering of the species.

03

Nearby places

Standing on Barbuda’s southern coast, Martello Tower dates from the early 1800s. The British built it as a defensive position guarding the river landing, which served as the island’s original quay.

04

Money

The EC dollar is the official currency, although rooms, excursions and car hire are commonly priced in US dollars.
